Hotline: Weekend Flyer Roundup (marathon)

Thursday also brings the Hotline Weekend Flyer Roundup, listing about 30 cool events going on around town through Sunday, and these are my favorites, visually speaking:

Cheaps: Making out, MTV casting & the Bruins

It's Thursday, so it's time for another of my Cheap Thrills columns in the Boston Herald, and this week we'll be making out, auditioning for the Real World and growing a beard for Bruins hockey, all on the free.

OPEN-MOUTH MARATHON
Boston Babydolls French Kiss-a-Thon in Harvard Square

Saturday at 5 p.m., Winthrop Park in front of UpStairs on the Square, 91 Winthrop St., Cambridge; 5 p.m., 18-plus, FREE
According to the Boston Babydolls burlesque troupe, the world record for the longest-running kiss between two individuals clocks in at 32 hours, 7 minutes and 14 seconds. That’s more tongue than you can find in a Jewish deli. Though the Babydolls don’t expect records to be set this weekend, they are asking everyone to pucker up and give some juicy wet lip service to their significant other. The Babydolls’ French Kiss-a-Thon on Saturday in Harvard Square is a clever promo for their “French Kiss” show April 25 and 26 at the nearby Oberon (2 Arrow St.; $15-$40, cluboberon.com). It’s free and open to all couples ages 18 and up, and prizes include Oberon tickets and gifts from Peet’s Coffee, Lush Cosmetics and Eastern Standard. All contestants will receive a thank-you gift.

REAL OPPORTUNITY
“Real World” open casting call in Allston

Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Sunset Grill and Tap and Big City, 138 Brighton Ave. in Allston; all-ages, FREE
“Jersey Shore” may have supplanted “The Real World” as MTV’s must-watch smutty reality show, but all it takes is one loose cannon to vault the show back into the gossip sites. And where can “Real World” casting directors find such low-brow gold? Allston Rock City, of course. MTV is hosting an open casting call for the 25th season of the legendary reality show series in the heart of Allston Village all day Saturday at Sunset Grill and Big City on Brighton Avenue. Candidates are asked to bring a picture of themselves - which shouldn’t be a problem for those wishing to be a reality star - and a photo ID. The casting is only open to those ages 18 to 24, but the people-watching is open to all ages.

READY FOR BATTLE
Boston Bruins viewing party and Beard-a-Thon launch
Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Hard Rock Cafe, 22-24 Clinton St.; all-ages, FREE
Long before hipsters from Brooklyn to Jamaica Plain annexed the beard and made it the accessory of trendy indie-rock dudes, the beard was synonymous with two things: your creepy Uncle Angelo and the NHL playoffs. With the Bruins in Buffalo, N.Y., to begin their on-ice quest for the Stanley Cup, the hockey organization has invited fans to catch Game 2 on Saturday on the big screens of the Hard Rock Cafe. The Bruins Ice Girls and Blades the mascot will be hanging out, and prizes include upcoming playoff tickets and signed memorabilia by goalie Tuuka Rask and Patrice Bergeron. But the start of the playoffs has also launched the B’s Beard-a-Thon, an annual fund-raiser where last year almost 1,200 fans grew out their facial hair and raised about $100,000 for the Bruins Foundation. Shaggy supporters can track their beards at beardathon.com, which also highlights a Beard of the Day and updates a beard leaderboard.

Super sick new video just released by Spirit Kid for their new jam "My Imagination." Catch them at the pill on May 14.

the pill -- "Best Dance Night" Best '10

Well, we won. Thanks to all who voted in the Boston Phoenix' Best 2010 Reader's Poll, as we took home another "Best Dance Night" honor.

Because it's the people's vote, we salute you. We thank everyone who comes out every Friday night and helps make the pill what it is. Endless Wave on deck tomorrow night.

Of all the ways and means to shake your stuff in the city, THE PILL is easiest to swallow. Every Friday night in Allston, DJs Ken and Michael V stir up a dance party that draws a scene-spanning crowd, week after week, month after month. Britpop is the flavor of choice, and now and then bands (Dear Leader, Passion Pit, Hooray for Earth, the Daily Pravda, many others) take the stage so the turntablists can catch their breath.

Peter Steele of Type O Negative ...dead?

Hearing rumors that Peter Steele of Type O Negative died yesterday of heart failure. Don't know for sure, but hearing it all over. If true, definitely a bummer. Cool Brooklyn goth-metal (?? I dunno, heavy as fuck, but dark as fuck too) band that put on a great show. I used to hang with one of Peter's girlfriends/mistresses and the stories were legendary. "Bloody Kisses" was a Michael V fave in high school.

Edit: Yeah I originally posted the "Summers Breeze" cover but it was a Jennifer Love Hewitt movie clip video and Steele deserves more respect than that.

Throwed gets an extension

Oh, cool. Just posted by Jellz:

We're sorry if we stressed all you guys out, but WE AREN'T ENDING ANYMORE!!! We worked out all the details with the club and we're golden, so we're gonna be bringing you banging parties all summer long!

WE LOVE ALL OF YOU SO MUCH!! LET'S FUCKING RAGE!

The NJ Devils playoff run starts tonight...

Let's bring home Number 4, boys... Good lord I am EXCITED! Best time of year -- it's beautiful outside, the baseball marathon is underway and playoff hockey is here. GO DEVILS!!!

WZBC Spring Show tonight @ Great Scott

Depending on how well tonight's opening Devils playoff games goes against the shit-tastic Flyers, I might end up needing a drink -- celebratory or otherwise -- down at Great Scott. I won't even care who's playing, but the WZBC Spring Show with Maps & Atlases and Drink Up Buttercup seems OK despite the game forcing me to miss the one act I want to catch most -- Worcester's one man trance party Coralcola. We'll see how it goes. A lot of Chicago in the house tonight... Don't want to jinx the Devils when they face the Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup Finals.

VIDEO: Technoir MA release "Sparks"

I have a warm gooey soft spot in my heart for Technoir MA, and today the Somerville-based post punk duo released a video for latest single "Sparks." It's the new jam off the "2/B" EP, which was released in February at the pill.

I urge you to pour a drink each time you recognize a Boston landmark. My only complaint here is the scenes of WINTER... My god I don't want to see snow for several more months. Mommy make the bad man stop!

New Blur single called 'Fool's Day'

The NME has the details of the new Blur single "Fool's Day", which coincidentally is how I refer to the release date of "Think Tank" a few years ago. It drops on Record Store Day -- or Memorial Day for music nerds -- and the NME even comes correct with the sleeve artwork. Who the fuck even knows what this will sound like.
