They said it couldn’t be done. Halloween is a time for suspension of reality, hinging on a willingness to transport oneself to an alternative mindset of fantasy and idolatry. At our annual Halloween shows, musical extensions to the past are commonplace, and usually there is a clear and safe lineage between today’s performer and yesterday’s hero. Taking on the Smiths, however, was a task immediately dismissed by most and viewed skeptically by the rest. Except, of course, for the four lads in Boston’s rising modern indie outfit ready to play the role: the Honors. In short, they fucking killed it. It was a legendary show, set for the ages. This week the Honors return to our Great Scott stage, their second performance with us in a year’s time and third if you include their rousing rendition of Morrissey, Marr and those famed spare lawnmower parts. Dropping the thin veil of majestic tribute, the Honors re-emerge at our Friday night dance party armed solid with their own pop gems, taking easy melodic glide of rock n’ roll’s radio dial and juxtaposing it against the jubilant buzz of tomorrow’s underground scene. Two new Honors tracks, “Driven By Strangers” and “Lower Allston,” bask in the keen residue of those late-night Smiths practice sessions, and suggest these charming men have a light that won’t go out anytime soon. Join us as we reel around the modern indie fountain this Friday at the pill.

TONIGHT: Dirty dance party @ Good Life

So let's dance, and drink, and screw -- because there's nothing else to do. Breaking from the usual Friday night routine -- perhaps a filler for missing next week's pill -- I'm spinning at Good Life in Downtown Crossing tonight at the Viva Viva & Endless Wave show. Taking it to the floor, taking it to the basement, all in the name of the late Corey Haim.

I'll be spinning a mix of electropop and indie before, between and after two awesome bands -- nonstop party people Viva Viva played the pill last January, and the whiteout shoegaze-pop of Endless Wave hits the pill next month. Loves.

Kinda excited for Dear Leader swinging by the pill tonight, the first in their two-night weekend stand. Every time I see a listing for a DL show it's at the Paradise or somewhere much larger, so it'll be interesting to see what the door looks like around 11pm, when the band hits the stage. Way back in the strange times of 2005, the pill’s Michael V was living an alternative life while overseeing the seedier depths of the former Lansdowne Street rock strip, calling upon Sheila Divine for an exclusive New Year’s Eve reunion show. The band obliged, and a scant trace of clean respectability was brought to an otherwise wretched hive of scum and villainy. Years later, the legacy and sound of Boston’s legendary Sheila Divine lives on through the pulse of Aaron Perrino and his modern rock army Dear Leader.

Sculpting politically and socially charged anthem rock for a post millennial world trapped within a twentieth century mindset, Dear Leader is a continuous shining light in this city’s ever-evolving underground sonic landscape. This Friday at the pill, the band kicks off Dear Leader Weekend with a turbo-charged sonic rock explosion across our increasingly synthesized dance floor.

Dear Leader augments our modern indie dance party in Night 1 before enlisting Arletta and the Hush Now for a Saturday night showcase entirely fit for the glory days of Great Scott’s first foray into a proper reflection of Allston Rock City, The Plan. Skipping venues twice the size of ours, Dear Leader has opted to pack the clubs over two nights in the name of the people. Join us for the dance-minded opening shot.

As Jarvis Cocker of Pulp once sang, “This isn’t chocolate boxes and roses, it’s dirtier than that.” And so like those small animals that only come out at night, the pill kick starts Boston’s anti-Valentine’s Day weekend with an all night modern indie dance party mixer for the lovers, would-be lovers and the scorned black hearts of the lonely generation.

And the timing for another all-nighter is fast appropriate, as the pill has been nominated once again for “Best Dance Night” in the Boston Phoenix’s “Best of ’10” reader’s poll. Our humble little Britpop throw down took home the honor last year, and of course we’d love the people’s vote once again. Joining us on the ballot is our beloved Allston Dance City venue, Great Scott, which is up for “Best Rock Club” and "Best Bar.”

But these heavy accolades are a merely a cute liner note wink within the pill’s Friday night legacy, so dance with us this week as resident DJs Ken & Michael V extinguish the flames of love and coat the big pink in a harsh gray for both the lonely souls and catered holes, shining together like thunder under a dance floor’s colorful strobe.

Whether you arrive with an old lover or leave with a new one, you have the rest of the weekend to callously romanticize the rest of your love life. Look sharp, be ours, leave a note in the morning. xo the pill.

3.10 @ Good Life: Endless Wave & Viva Viva

This is a bit of an advanced warning, but it's a fantabulous bill and I'm a bit hungover from last night's Super Bowl Shit Show at the OB. Any sports bash that involves pinball and concludes with drunken Suede sing-a-longs is A-OK in my book.

But regarding this here below, I'm excited to be a part of it, and the impatient can catch a glimpse of Endless Wave next Wednesday at TTs then recap this bad boy April 16 at le pill.

On May 12, 1984, a Terminator cyborg assassin sent from the future walked into a Los Angeles nightclub on Pico in search of a woman named Sarah Connor. His efforts were intercepted by a human soldier also from the year 2029, assigned to protect Connor until her son would lead a resistance against the machines several decades later under darkened new millennial skies. The nightclub caught in the middle of this battle was Tech Noir, and as humanity awaits this pending apocalyptic assault on mankind, its soundtrack lives on in the cold empty wasteland that is Boston winter.

Releasing their new EP “2/B” this week at the pill, Technoir MA sonically echo this vision of sci-fi post-punk under a cold blanket of Manchester’s aural underground. A Somerville-based duo of guitarists aided by a sinister machine – the Alesis SR-16 – Technoir MA unleash a new order for electronically-armed modern pop-rock washed in trance-skewered layers of white noise. From the Boston Phoenix: "A surprise guest, Technoir MA, followed, offering a fun set of electropop with avant-punk vocal strains (both senses) and melancholy guitar lines à la Joy Division."

It’s a fitting live sound for a dance party in bleak February, and on a night where the pill celebrates five years of Friday nights at Great Scott in Allston Dance City. Between the lonely past and destructive future, the pill is today’s modern world.

Oh hai, the pill was nominated for BEST DANCE NIGHT in the Boston Phoenix "Best '10" reader's poll. I supposed we are "defending champs" or something, as our little 12-year-old modern indie dance party won this last year -- thanks to the people's vote!

Of course, we'd love to score this honor once again, and be sure to name Great Scott as BEST ROCK VENUE.

Tomorrow night is the KEM PA SOTE benefit for Haiti earthquake relief efforts at the Middle East, and I requested to open the show with the more chilled out side of electro-pop and synthwave.

I'm DJing the Kem Pa Sote benefit for Haiti Wednesday night at the Middle East in Cambridge. I asked to spin the early set, so I can cut out for a bit for the Armory's opening party in Somerville, but if you're around Central on Wednesday, do drop by -- four great bands and three great DJs (well, OK, two great DJs and then my sorry ass) all for a great cause.

"Kem Pa Sote" means "I'm not afraid," or something similar to that sentiment. Word.

I've wanted an excuse to use this David Bowie mugshot on a flyer for ages, and well, here we are. It's his 63rd birthday, so I'll paint a red bolt on my grill and spin some extra Bowie tonight at the pill (and play Labyrinth or something on the TVs). It's also FNX's Paul Driscoll's birthday, so we're letting him spin a modern indie set as well. All festive and shit.

Ahhh New Year's Eve, from watching my then-girlfriend Kathleen cheat on me with some blond yup named Josh at a high school party around 1995 to fending off fierce masses and wishing my more recent then-girlfriend was dead while DJing at the CommonGround last year, it's always an event to cherish.

Tonight I'll be spinning at the Distillery in Southie, a needed respite from cunty clubland and faux-poh nightlife promises. But if I were out and about in $25-coverland, I'd be with Steve Porter, Repeat Offenders and the crew bound to kill it at Flat Top Johnny's. This massive Confetti Cannon is a sight to behold. Drink what you wanna drink, playa you hood rich. xoMv.

Foxwoods & the pill for my XmasBirthday

Heading down to Foxwoods in a little bit with the lady and some good peoples, intent on gambling my life away at the MGM Grand roulette wheel just as the clock strikes midnight on my birthday (you people call it Christmas). Ever play Roulette? Always bet on black.

Upon hungover return tomw I plan on hanging with Lola & Kay, eating mad Chinese food, watching Ghost World and Killing Zoe and then heading to Great Scott for the pill's I Was Born On Christmas Day holiday dance party. Finally, a birthday party ON my birthday.
