Ghost World tonight at the Brattle Theatre

After Daniel Clowes reads from his new graphic novel "Wilson" at the Brattle Theatre tonight (6pm), the author, artist and illustrator will introduce "Ghost World," the 2001 Terry Zwigoff-directed film launched from his 1993-1997 comic book series of the same name.

Despite feverish efforts by both "Killing Zoe" and "Empire Strikes Back," "Ghost World" remains my favorite movie of all-time. Enid, played by Thora Bitch, is essentially me as a girl, and after seeing this maybe a few hundred times, I still can't get over how it moves me.

Dan Clowes and Terry Zwigoff team up to bring Clowes’ comic book GHOST WORLD to the big screen – but this isn’t your average superhero story. In fact, there isn’t a super power to be found in this sarcastic coming-of-age tale. Birch and Johansson play Enid and Rebecca, two misanthropic proto-hipster high school friends who find it difficult to adjust to the challenges of the ‘real world.’ Cruising yard sales for retro-cool finds, they cross paths with creepy geek Seymour (Buscemi) whose seemingly pathetic existence eventually changes Enid’s perspective on life.
