It's fucking snowing. I hate the snow. It's fucking Thursday. I love Thursday. On tap in my Cheap Thrills column in today's Boston Herald: Jenny Dee goes pop, Boston's filmmakers take a Census and Bermudez finds A New Hope at Odyssey. Lotta Friday love...
RELEASED FOR GOOD BEHAVIOR
Jenny Dee & the Deelinquents CD release party at T.T. the Bear’s Place
Friday at 8 p.m., 10 Brookline St., Cambridge; 18-plus, $10
The Boston area has always been a fertile ground for retro-minded soul dance parties, from the old Mod Night in Allston to Cambridge’s Mambo Beat Club and Soul-Le-Lu-Jah to the fresh-faced Red Rose Soul Club out in Somerville. So it was only a matter of time before bands started joining in sound with the disc-digging DJs around town. Friday night, the eight-piece Jenny Dee & the Deelinquents step up to the microphone, releasing a new CD of soul nuggets. Armed with ’60s-style production, choreographed stage moves and matching outfits, Jenny Dee (formerly of local garage rockers the Dents and Downbeat 5) and crew already have a Best New Act nomination from last year’s Boston Music Awards under their polka-dotted belt. And the evening’s bill is stacked like the record collections of the Soul-Le-Lu-Jah DJs, who spin between live sets: Jedediah Parish of the Gravel Pit, Blizzard of ’78, Gene Dante and the Future Starlets, Jordan Valentine & the Sunday Saints, and Barrence Whitfield & the Monkeyhips.

SENSES BUREAU
Ninth annual Boston Cinema Census at the Brattle Theatre
Friday at 9:30 p.m., 40 Brattle St., Harvard Square, Cambridge; all-ages, $9.75 ($7.75 students)
Sure, the 82nd annual Academy Awards roll around Sunday night, but we here at Cheap Thrills don’t have the attention span for any of the Best Picture nominees. For under 10 bones, Hollywood East shows off its creative and experimental underbelly at the ninth annual Boston Cinema Census. More than 100 short-film submissions were whittled down by local nonprofit filmmaker organization Central Productions, and tomorrow Central offers up the seven best, spanning fiction, animation, experimental and documentary. Participants range from emerging students to seasoned enthusiasts, and no film exceeds 20 minutes. That’s the same amount of time it takes some stars to cross the red carpet.

QUAKE AND SHAKE
DJ Joe Bermudez at Odyssey: A New Hope at the Good Life
Friday at 9:30 p.m., 28 Kingston St., Downtown Crossing; 21-plus, $5
Edited out but restored for Vanyaland: Last weekend’s earthquake in Chile apparently knocked the Earth off its axis. Thankfully, the sonic bass boom of Joe Bermudez might be enough to knock it back into place. The Boston-based but internationally acclaimed house DJ and producer Joe Bermudez hits up the monthly Odyssey electro dance party Friday night. When not shaking up the club circuit with remixes of everyone from Britney to MSTRKRFT, Bermudez hosts a weekly dance music program on XM Satellite Radio and oversees the Mass Movement podcast and radio blog. DJ Times Magazine dubbed Bermudez among the country’s Top 20 DJs and he’s a frequent name among International Dance Music Award nominations. At Odyssey he’s joined by So Dope’s Damien Paul in the downstairs room, while J-Bro and J-Will keep the beat steady on the ground floor. Mike Tran emcees, James Coletta snaps pics and Throwed’s resident visual engineer Jellz provides the sights aligned to the sounds. Not a bad haul for a Lincoln downtown.
