With Valentine's Day fast approaching, here's a pink-dink rendition of my Cheap Thrills column in today's Boston Herald, rocking a disco without sound, some love for Bonnie Tyler and a party perfect for a love-drunk hangover.
FALLING ON DEF EARS
Silent Disco at the Milky Way’s Recess dance party
Friday at 9 p.m., 284 Amory St., Jamaica Plain; 21-plus, $5 (includes free headphone rental)
There’s a scene in the 2002 film “24 Hour Party People” where Factory Records owner Tony Wilson asks Joy Division producer Martin Hannett what he’s doing in an empty field. “Recording silence” is the answer. The late Hannett would be in his glory tomorrow night when Silent Storm Sound System presents another Silent Disco, this one hitting the Recess party in Jamaica Plain. DJs play music, but you can only hear it if you’re wearing Silent Disco-supplied headphones. If you ever walked into a dance party and thought the music was too loud, clearly, old timer, this party’s for you.

SING FLING
Total Eclipse of the Heart ’80s Love Song Singalong at the Coolidge Corner Theatre
Saturday at 11:55 p.m., 290 Harvard St., Brookline; all-ages, $10 ($8 for Coolidge members)
Every now and then we fall apart, and when we do, we like to sing like Bonnie Tyler - loud, passionate and in a darkened room. So really, there’s no better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than with a singalong. And naturally, the Coolidge Corner and Action Pack answers the siren call across the battlefield that is love with a midnight heart-fest celebrating the best in cheesy ’80s love songs. Think hits from Hall & Oates, Rod Stewart, Rick Springfield, Pat Benatar, Air Supply, Prince, Wham!, Billy Idol, Tina Turner and the rest of the sappy ’80s soundtrack. Just remember the gospel of Tyler: bright eyes, forever’s gonna start tonight.

Fast-forward to the day after Valentine’s Day, and now you’re either broke, brokenhearted or both. So as you pick up the shattered pieces of either your heart or your bank account, you need an inexpensive-yet-awesome way to spend the evening. Enter RiotVine and Tea Party Boston’s Broke After V-Day party at the Middlesex, who know you don’t need a wallet full of Benjamins to celebrate Presidents Day. Local electronic-flavored indie bands the Main Drag and Southern Belle hit the stage, and DJ Justincredible, one-half the Allston electro duo Roguewaves, spins dance music all night. Oh, and it’s free, just like your mangled little heart.
