Repost from today's Hotline blog entry: There’s no shortage of performance-rock coming out of Boston these days, but one of Brooklyn’s finer theatrical pop acts rolls into TT The Bear’s Place in Cambridge Friday night. They’re called Bryan Scary & the Shredding Tears, and they are fairly awesome if you dig Queen’s glam rock flair mixed with a bit of They Might Be Giants quirkiness. It’s an engaging story-telling rock opera based around a fictional place called Scaryville. Hey, it works.
Scary & his boys are paired up nicely Friday night alongside New Jersey’s the Black Hollies, who roll out the groove-fueled mod-revivalism like few others and just scream to be played on 45s. I always think of the song “Bus Stop” by the (original) Hollies when I hear the name, and this new Hollies sound isn’t too far off. Though just a few years into their tenure as a band, the Black Hollies already have psychedelic ‘60s rock harmonies down to a science. Chances are someone will arrive to this gig on a Vespa.
